Candy took a final drag from her cigarette. Crushing the butt under her heel, she looked at her reflection in the shop window. Her normally thick and wavy hair hung limp around her face, accented by hollow dark circles under heavily lined eyes. She hated it, but there was a method to her madness.
She walked around the corner and up to a thick steel door. As she knocked, a small speakeasy window opened. Sniffing, she wiped her nose, eyes darting around nervously. “Hey man, it’s freezing. Let me in.” She ran her hand through her stringy, greasy mess of hair.
“Gonna need the password sugar” the gruff voice replied. She fiddled with her jacket zipper. “Damn man, it’s uh… sticky icky” she stuttered. He started closing the window, when she called “No! Uh, yellow submarine. Man, I can’t keep straight what day it is” laughing nervously as he stared her down.
The deadbolt rang out like a shot, echoing down the deserted street. Candy steeled herself as she stepped over the threshold and into the club, “Den of Sin”.
With her hand in her jacket pocket, gripping the Narcan spray tightly, she looked around and saw what she had both hoped and dreaded finding. Her sister sitting in a corner booth, head lolled back on the padding, needle still stuck in her arm. “Fifth times the charm I guess” she muttered as she made her way over. Maybe this time, she could save her sister for good.
